“Autopoietic 1” is the debut solo recording from drummer/improviser Kevin Romain. In his own words:
“Rhythm induces in a listener a sensation of movement through space, even while remaining relatively still. Polyrhythm opens a paradoxical space in which we can move through space at multiple speeds simultaneously, or in multiple directions at once – Dancing in our heads, substituting dream logic for the laws of physics. These drumset improvisations are miniature explorations of the phenomenology of polyrhythm and the accompanying granular emotional states; a search for the limits of my own sense-making affordances; a dialogue between the various voices that populate my internal landscape. I hope this music is fun to listen to. I think of attention and focus as highly limited endogenous resources and as analogous to/expressions of love. Your time spent with this recording is not taken for granted.”
Autopoietic 1 was recorded in 2024 at Vancouver’s Afterlife Studios and released in the Spring of 2025 on The Infidels Jazz record label. Listen here.

Salience Network is a modern jazz ensemble led by drummer and composer Kevin Romain. Dramatic, spontaneous creation and razor-sharp precision come together on stage with Romain’s longtime collaborators Jeff Gammon (bass), John Nicholson (tenor and soprano saxophones) and Feven Kidane (trumpet). Together they explore, through dense polyrhythms and snaking melodies, Romain’s hyperfixations with the science of emotion, circadian biology, coffee extraction theory, cool animals, and anti-colonial resistance. The debut album, recorded to tape by John Raham at Vancouver’s Afterlife Studios, is a somber document punctuated by moments of humour and hope. It was released in November 2023 on The Infidels Jazz label.
